OMICRON Advanced Protection Testing Course

Objectives

After completion of this course each learner will have an in-depth understanding of how to test the various types of relays from first principles, i.e. injecting a distance, directional overcurrent, transformer differential and line differential relay with just voltages and currents using QuickCMC. The manufacturer specific operating characteristics and algorithms used by relays common in the local market will be explained.
Each learner will learn how to develop his own automatic test template for a multi- function relay using the features of the OMICRON Control Center.

Theory session

The participants will be familiarised with the theory of protective relays. Testing protective relays from first principles will be demonstrated. Each learner will perform a number of tasks using the test software in the offline mode.

Practical session

The participants will have to apply the gained knowledge. Test stations with a test set each for a distance, a directional overcurrent and a transformer differential relay are set up. The participants are divided into groups, which rotate through the different test stations performing a number of tasks at each station.

Contents

  • OMICRON Control Center (OCC): Generating fully automatic test templates for multi-function relays. Customizing comprehensive test reports. Advanced features of the OCC.
  • Distance relays: Testing a distance relay from first principles, i.e. just injecting voltages and currents using QuickCMC. Relay specific characteristics and algorithms for the various relay manufacturers. Advanced features of the Test Universe software.
  • Directional overcurrent relays: Testing a directional overcurrent relay from first principles. Automatic testing of the directional function with the OCC.
  • Transformer differential relays: Testing a transformer differential relay from first principles. Advanced features of the Test Universe software.
  • Line differential relays: Testing a line differential relay from first principles. Relay specific characteristics and algorithms for the various relay manufacturers. End-to-end testing.
  • XRIO Converters: Development of a simple XRIO converter for a specific relaying function. Setting up a fully automatic test in the State Sequencer / Ramping module using ‘Link2XRIO’ technology. 


Pre-requisites for the seminar

  • 
OMICRON Basic Protection Testing Seminar

  • A good understanding of protection systems and the different types of relaying 
(distance, directional over-current, transformer differential and line differential).
  • 
Sufficient field experience specifically testing and commissioning protection systems (minimum 1 year).
