MPD 600 - OMICRON testing technology for the world's tallest building

The power supply to the Burj Khalifa tower is provided using more than 70 so-called dry-type resin-encapsulated RESIBLOC® transformers from ABB. As partial discharges can cause permanent damage to the insulation of this type of transformer, the international testing standard IEC 60076-11 prescribes a maximum partial discharge limit of 10 pC for new dry-type transformer.

For testing all transformers for PD, the ABB facility has two MPD 600 three-phase PD measuring systems in place, as they are able to measure at such low PD levels.
